How to Choose Motor Oil?

Choosing the right motor oil is critical for your vehicle's performance and engine longevity. Consider the following factors when selecting oil.

Viscosity Grade

Viscosity refers to the oil's flowability. For example, in 5W-30: - 5W: Indicates Winter performance. Lower number = better cold flow. - 30: Indicates viscosity at operating temperature.

API and ACEA Standards

  • API SP: The current American Petroleum Institute gasoline engine standard (2020). SP can be safely used in vehicles requiring SN.
  • API CK-4 / FA-4: Current standards for diesel engines (2016). CK-4 maintains traditional viscosity, while FA-4 focuses on fuel economy with lower viscosity.
  • ACEA A3/B4: European standard for high-performance gasoline and diesel engines

OEM Approvals

Your vehicle manufacturer may require specific approvals: - Mercedes-Benz: 229.5, 229.51 (low ash) - BMW: LL-04 (diesel/DPF), LL-01 FE (new turbo gasoline), LL-17FE (2018+ models) - VW: 502.00/505.00 (classic), 508.00/509.00 (2018+ models requiring 0W-20) - Renault: RN17, RN17 FE (caution: these are not interchangeable)

Synthetic or Mineral?

  • Fully Synthetic: Best protection, long drain intervals, superior cold performance
  • Semi Synthetic: Good performance-price balance
  • Mineral: Suitable for older engines and lower budgets

Always follow the recommendations in your vehicle's owner manual.
