Transmission and Gear Oil Guide
Transmission and gear oils are critical lubricants that protect your vehicle's drivetrain components and ensure smooth gear shifts.
Automatic Transmission Fluids (ATF)
Automatic transmissions can suffer serious damage if the wrong ATF is used.
- ATF Dexron II: Used in power steering and automatic transmissions of older GM and Ford vehicles. Also preferred in hydraulic systems of some work machines.
- ATF Dexron III: Meets GM Dexron IIIH/IID, Ford Mercon, Voith H55.6335, MAN 339 standards. Provides superior protection in steering, hydraulic units across wide temperature ranges.
- ATF CVT: Specially developed for Japanese-designed CVT (continuously variable) transmissions. Provides smoother shifting, consistent all-weather performance, and extended transmission life.
- ATF DSG: For dual-clutch (DSG/DCT) transmissions
- ATF Dexron VI: The current GM ATF standard, replacing Dexron III. Recommended for newer generation automatic transmissions.
Manual Transmission and Gear Oils
Gear oils contain EP (Extreme Pressure) additives that reduce wear caused by friction.
- 75W-80: Passenger vehicle manual transmissions
- 75W-90: Light commercial and passenger vehicle gearboxes
- 85W-140: Heavy duty differentials and gearboxes
- EP 80W90 / EP 85W140: Heavy transport and service vehicles
API GL Classification
- GL-4: Medium-load gearboxes, synchronized manual transmissions
- GL-5: High-load hypoid gears, differentials
When to Change?
- Automatic transmission: 60,000 - 80,000 km
- Manual transmission: 40,000 - 60,000 km
- Differential: 40,000 - 60,000 km
Always check the transmission oil specification in your vehicle's owner manual.
